Episode # 5 – Creating your website on the cheap
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
Your website checklist:
- Register Your Domain Name! I use and recommend GoDaddy.com.
- Buy a Hosting account with your domain name. At GoDaddy.com this is easy and inexpensive. Be sure to buy hosting where you have a Database (MySQL or similar), you’ll need this to install WordPress.
- If you use GoDaddy.com you can have WordPress installed onto your domain for free and fast! Be sure to follow the instructions and write all information down!
- Once you login to WordPress check out various designs or “Themes” under “Appearance” and “Themes”. Pick out one that you like. There are hundreds and they are FREE!
- Go to pages to create your pages. Your front page should tell about the product(s) you are selling. Tell a story! Tell as much as possible to peak the interest of the surfer / potential customer.
- Create a page where the product can be ordered. Use graphics, texts, video, audio, … whatever works!
- Create an “About” page – Tell everyone about YOU and what you do!
- Create a “Contact” page – tell people how to get in touch with you for questions, suggestions, etc.
- Create an “Terms of Service” page and an “Imprint” page. Check out other website to get an idea of what belongs there. Ultimately, you’ll need to get some legal advice on what belongs in both pages.
- Go to the “Plugins” page and search for “PayPal” or “eCommerce”. You should be able to see a whole long list of free plugins that you can use to set up shop. Personally, I like “WP Shopping Cart” from Instinct. It’s easy and fast.
Now you’re pretty set and ready to go!
In the next episode we’ll deal with promoting your website effectively and again – FOR FREE!
